Greetings from Hutcheshausen, Germany

Here is a picture of our two girls, Jennifer and Brittany standing in front of Puerto Niegra, the ancient city gates of the oldest city in Germany. Trier is the homeplace of ancient Romans whose ruins still stand in the city today. It is also the site of the home of Karl Marx. In modern day, it is the host of one of the best Christmas Markets in Germany. During our visit to the city, the temperature hovered in the upper 20's and snow silently but quickly covered everything and everyone. Perhaps, one of the most impressive sites in the city was the cathederal. This ancient building has survived revolutions and wars and still stands as a testament to the dedication and commitment of people through the ages to the worship of their God. The building is made of huge stone blocks and the interior of the auditorium and the altar reflect the craftsmanship and pride of the ancient artists and builders. As I stood in this massive House of God, I thought about the people who built this building and those who have served in it through the years and maybe, even those who took shelter in it while bombs were dropping all around during the great world wars, or perhaps, those who served clandestinely in order to avoid the prosecution from government authorities. I also thought of the allied soldiers who trudged through deep snow very similar to the snow we experienced today in order to protect the way of life I enjoy today.

Such reflection can only lead to one conclusion for me. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the men and women who came before me, serving God, serving others, and serving their country. I owe such a debt that I can never repay it. I also owe a debt of gratitude to my Lord who orchestrated every stone as it was laid upon the previous stone in the building of this beautiful temple, and who placed a shield over this building to protect it from the rain of allied bombs on this German city, and who continues to call His people to serve in this building and many others like it around the world today. Most of all, I am thankful to an all-powerful, all-knowing God who saw fit to allow his only son to die on an old wooden cross in order to save me from an eternity in hell. Thank you, Jesus! Amen!

Wishes for a warm, spirit-filled Christmas

Thanks to all of you who were able to join us for the class Christmas Dinner last night. Cindy and I thoroughly enjoyed having you in our home and we hope that you enjoyed the get-together as much as we did. It is always fun to spend time with our Sunday School brothers and sisters in a different setting that allows us to visit, have fun, and get to know more about each other. I will include a recipe from Laura Brittain for her dessert that she shared last night as well as a recipe for the chili and the tortilla soup that we ate last night at the end of this blog.

This time of year is one of my favorite! The grass is not growing so I don't have to worry about mowing the grass all the time, I can sit on my back porch without getting drenched in perspiration, it's hunting season--enough said, and it is a time when friends and family often get together for visits, fellowship, food, and fun. Our time together last night seemed to be a combination of good food, tremendous desserts, Christian fellowship, laughter, and fun. Cindy and I enjoyed hearing stories of your young families. The stories of how your young children perceive Santa Claus and how you help to perpetuate the myth of Santa in your family were amusing and reminiscent of an earlier time with our own girls. Enjoy these days with your little ones. They are precious and they will pass quickly.

Since we will be out of town--yes, out of the country--for the next three weeks, I wanted to extend best wishes from Cindy and me to each of you for a blessed time with your families. We pray that each of you will enjoy an extra heaping of fun, joy, and fellowship with those whom you love this Christmas. From our house to your's, we wish each of you a warm, spirit-filled, joyous Christmas Holiday.

We will look forward to seeing you again on January 10 as we continue our quest for "Truth" in The Truth Project.

Here are the recipes from last night's dishes:
Take-Along Cake

1 package of chocolate cake mix (I used Devil's food ... which I guess was not appropriate for a Sunday school party!)
1 package (12 ounces) of semisweet chocolate chips (I've used peanut butter chips before too, and it was really good as well)
1 cup of miniature marshmallows (I usually use about a cup and 1/2)
1/4 cup of butter, melted
1/2 cup of brown sugar (packed)
1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts (I used a little more than that and I've used both kind of nuts ... equally as good ... used pecans last night because that's what I had on hand)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray cooking spray in a 13x9 pan.

2. Prepare cake mix as directed on package. Stir in chocolate chips and marshmallows. Pour into the prepared pan. Drizzle melted butter over the batter. Sprinkle with sugar and top with pecans. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 55 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve warm or cool completely in the pan. You can serve it warm with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla for an extra special treat. Serves 12 to 16.

Chili Dinner--Parking Suggestions

Our driveway will be clear tomorrow evening when you arrive for our Christmas Dinner. Please feel free to park in the driveway. We can conceivably park nine vehicles in the driveway if folks are not afraid to have someone parked behind them. Since most of these kinds of parties usually break up at the same time, I encourage you to take advantage of this convenient parkings space if it is available when you arrive. Even if you do get pinned in, those behind you will always be willing to let you out if you have to leave before they are ready to leave.

Another option is to park at the dead-end segment of Spring Creek. As you approach the intersection of Spring Creek and Turtle Rock Loop, you will notice that Spring Creek goes straight ahead to a dead end. It is permissible to park on the curb on either side of this T-shaped dead end and walk around the corner to our house.

Finally, if you prefer, you may certainly park on the side of the street. Just please be careful not to block any of the neighbor's driveways.

Give me a call if you get lost. 979-695-1684.

December 13, 2009--Who is God--Part 2

Today in Sunday School, we viewed the second half of the video lesson from The Truth Project in which Dr. Del Tackett addresses the question, "Who is God?" According to the Truth Project, "Knowing God is absolutely central to the meaning of human life, for it is only in the context of intimate, personal relationship with Him that we experience eternal life." (Lesson 4 Leader Guide, p.1)

In the first half of this lesson, Dr. R.C. Sproul describes our era as one in which the knowledge of God has been eclipsed. I think this is a great description of what is happening with God and His Word in our culture and our world. In other words, even though there have been efforts to do so, the truth and the knowledge of God have not been destroyed. However, they have been obscured and shadowed by lies and misconceptions. Dr. Tackett addresses some of the attacks that have been leveled against God's Word during the video segment we watched today. He answered the objections of Voltaire, Robert Ingersoll, and liberal theologians such as Julius Wellhausen and members of the Jesus Seminar. He also demonstrated the Bible's historical accuracy by helping us resolve an apparent scriptural discrepancy concerning the dates of King Jehoram's reign.

R.C. Sproul made the statement that the establishment of two basic points related to God and His Word will make "90%" of the case for God. The two basic points are: 1) The existence of God, and 2) The credibility (accuracy and inerrancy) of His Word. Certainly, it seems reasonable that if we can establish with a non-believer that God does indeed exist and that the Bible is the all-powerful, all-inclusive, inerrant perfect Word of God, we can help that non-believer reach a saving Grace in Jesus Christ.

Much of today's lesson focused on the names of God, specifically, the name "El Qanna." Dr. Tackett made the point that names matter and when God gives himself a name, it describes a fundamental characteristic of God. He describes "El Qanna" as the God who is a consuming fire, jealous for the purity of the covenant relationship. When this knowledge dawns upon us, we can expect a couple of things. One is that the revelation of God's character is likely to reveal things to us about ourselves. Just as the prophet Isaiah declared, "Woe is me, for I am undone!"(Isaiah 6:5), we may be inclined to recognize our failures before God. Even though such a revelation will surely drive us to despair, He raises us and shows us who we can be in Him.

Today's episode helps us to understand that we should all have a thirst for the Word of God. The "thirst" should be so strong that we will not be deterred from spending time and energy in God's Word! Dr. Tackett states, "Knowing God ought to be our passion and our highest goal; for until we look upon His face, we cannot rightly know ourselves or begin to grasp the meaning of our existence in the world." (The Truth Project--Lesson 4 Leader Guide, p. 1).

Next week, the class will begin looking at the question, "What is truth?" This segment is fairly extensive and will address issues of science and the existence of an all-powerful, omnipotent, omni-present, God of the Universe. I hope you will make plans to be present for his intriguing presentation.

December Class Social

Please mark your calendars for an evening of fellowship and fun on December 14,2009. We are planning a class get-together that we hope will be an intimate dinner together for the couples of our class. Cindy and I will host a Christmas Dinner at our home beginning at 6:30 p.m. on December 14. The particulars regarding the dinner have not yet been determined. However, I wanted to get on your calendars as soon as possible and give you time to search out baby sitters if necessary. I hope you will make every effort to join us for this time together. We chose to have this get-together in our home rather than a restaurant or other venue in order to give us a better opportunity to fellowship together.

We shall look forward to spending some time together on the 14th.

November 22--Who Is Man? Part 2

Today's lesson was a continuation of the discussion of anthropology. For the past two weeks, we have been addressing the question, "Who is Man?" Dr. Tackett has repeatedly pointed toward the Biblical View of Man:
His Essence--made in the image of God, dualistic--both flesh and spirit
His Moral State--fallen nature
His Need--redemption

Yet, we have seen in the video that there are many prominent scientists and philosophers in our society who argue that man is inherently good. We saw excerpts of highly educated men who tried to build a case for the goodness of man. Carl Rogers said, "I do not find that evil is inherent in human nature." Yet, in a two-minute video segment, the argument of man's basic "goodness" was debunked, in my mind at least. The two minute segment showed actual news headlines of a mass murderer talking about his actions, the Los Angeles race riots in which a truck driver was brutally struck by a man who threw a brick at his face and then celebrated when his victim was knocked to the ground, Timothy McVeigh, the perpetrator of the horrific bombings in Oklahoma City, genocide, and several other terrible examples of evil that we have experienced in our own lifetime. Indeed, for me at least, this short video segment was enough evidence to prove that man is inherently evil, in a fallen condition, and in need of the grace and redemption of a loving savior.

We discussed the fact that much of our training and education reflects the humanistic view of man. For example, Abraham Maslow's work clearly suggests that man's ultimate objective is self-actualization--to get in touch with his inner self and to act accordingly. Dr. Tackett calls this a "pernicious lie" with serious consequences. It caused me to think of my own education and the many times that I had questions about the material that was being presented. Examples in the video included Haeckel's Embryos and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs both of which were prevalent in much of my own training. Many class members recalled these concepts and others in their own training. Many of the concepts we are taught in classes and training reflect the humanistic point of view and are contradictory to the Biblical View of Man. Yes, the "Cosmic Battle" rages within each of us. "A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy," is one of the basic concepts of evolution that is common in our society and in academia. The concept of environmentalism without the recognition of God as the creator of the environment is contradictory to the Biblical World View. Let's not be taken "captive" by the world's view of these issues. Romans 8:13 and Colossians 3:5-10 are perfect scripture references to help us avoid becoming a captive. Please feel free to post your own comments and reflections regarding these lessons.
Have a great week and a blessed Thanksgiving Holiday.

The Truth Project--Anthropology

PRAYER REQUESTS THIS MORNING: Kathleeen Gutierrez asked that we remember her mother who was laid off from her job of thirty years. Kathleen's mom will soon be seeking new employment and, after spending thirty years on the same job, will likely face challenges in adjusting to the expectations and requirements of the contemporary workplace. Please pray for Kathleen's mom as well as for many others who are seeking employment during this time of economic downturn. PRAISE: Marty Holmes reported that his grandmother turned 90 years old today. She is still a vibrant, active person who lives alone, drives her car, sells Stanley Home Products, and still mows her own yard. Wow! What a blessing she must be to her family. I suggested to Cindy that she should start mowing the grass if she wanted to live to be 90 years old, but she's not buying it.

Today, we began an in-depth examination of Biblical and contemporary ideas about the nature of the human race. The focus of the discussion is "anthropology", the study of man: Who is man? Where did he come from? What is the meaning and purpose of existence? In the course of this study, Dr. Tackett demonstrates that the answers we bring to these questions have a direct bearing upon our approach to another pressing problem, one of the thorniest and most challenging of all--"why is there evil in the world?"

Dr. Tackett begins to discuss basic assumptions about mankind in today's lesson. Here we again discover a fundamental conflict between Christianity and the perspective of contemporary culture. The Bible teaches that man consists of both body and spirit and is created in the image of God; our culture assumes that he is purely material, the product of mindless, purposeless forces.

Christianity represents evil as the product of the Cosmic Battle that rages within man--the conflict between humanity as it was meant to be and what it has actually become as a result of sin. Godless philosophy and psychology, on the other hand, can suggest only one possible solution to the problem of evil in the world; man must throw off the restraints of superimposed social conventions and institutions (i.e. any kind of moral standard) and pursue "self-fulfillment" to the fullest possible extent. This is what Dr. Tackett calls the "pernicious lie."

Some viewers--even those who consider themselves Christians--may have difficulty accepting the idea that "self-fulfillment" and the call to "follow your heart" are inconsistent with a Christian worldview. Others may object to Dr. Tackett's assertion that a great deal of the radical social and political activism we see in the world today is driven primarily by secular man's sinful desire to throw off the shackles of "God's social design." All will find it stimulating and profitable to wrestle with the question he poses: ""Why do non-believers and evolutionists find evil so troubling?"

The Truth Project--Philosophy and Ethics

This morning, we watched the second half of "Tour 2" in The Truth Project DVD Series. Some of you asked about the ten questions asked by the Barna Group in their survey that was referenced in the first half of this program. Here is the response I found on The Truth Project website:
"Re: In tour 2 our class wants to know what the 10 questions were that were in the survey that only 4%-9% HAD A BIBLICAL WORLDVEIW
From FAQ #24307:
Good Question.

I spoke with the folks at Barna, because I could not find the "Survey" online. They were very helpful. Here's what they shared with me.

Below is a list of questions we use to qualify whether or not someone really looks at the world through Christian eyes or not. We call this a Biblical worldview. If they don't strongly agree (or if they disagree with any of thestatements) then they don't have a Biblical worldview - as defined by The Barna Group. The five optional responses for each statement are - strongly agree, somewhat agree, somewhat disagree, strongly disagree, don't know:

Here are the statements:

I believe that absolute moral truth exists

I believe the source of moral truth is the Bible

I believe the Bible is accurate in all of the principles it teaches

I believe that eternal spiritual salvation cannot be earned

I believe that Jesus lived a sinless life on earth

I believe that every person has a responsibility to share their religious beliefs with others

I believe that Satan is a living force, not just a symbol of evil

I believe that God is the all-knowing, all-powerful maker of the universe who still rules that creation today."

I hope this information is helpful as you consider the implications of the programs we have watched for the past two weeks. I found the comparison between morality--what is, and ethics--what ought to be, a very interesting topic. Isn't it true that we often fall into the trap of assuming "what is" to be normal and right? Dr. Tackett encouraged us to embrace the guidance offered by Romans 12:2, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect."

NEXT WEEK: We are looking forward to having the Waysons speak to our class next week. This couple is recently home from their missionary service in China. I know they will bless us with their testimony. Also, please keep in mind that our class has been asked to sponsor a missions luncheon for the month of November. Dr. Scasta will be passing the offering plate next week in order to collect money for this purpose. Our goal is to collect $150 in order to fund the luncheon. I hope you will seek the Lord's will and will come to class prepared to support this effort if you are led to do so. Have a great week.

The Truth Project Lesson One--What is Truth?

I hope those of you who were in class today enjoyed watching the first lesson from the "Focus on the Family" Truth Project. The DVD takes 56 minutes and was presented by Dr. Del Tackett, a Senior Vice President of Focus on the Family. The first question posed to the class was, "Why did Jesus come to earth?" Perhaps, the best explanation of this discussion comes from the words of Dr. Tackett himself and from the Holy Scripture. The following paragraphs are lifted verbatim from The Truth Project website:

"But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons." Gal 4:4

For years, I have been asking my students the question: "Why was Jesus born? For what reason did He come into the world?" My first objective is to get people to think, which we unfortunately don't engage in much today. I have been amazed to see the look on people's faces when this question first confronts them. I can see they haven't really thought about it before. The second reason is that it affords the opportunity to ponder one of the most astounding events in all of history. Paul, in 1 Timothy 3, spoke of it this way:

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory.

John, in John 1, spoke of it this way:

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I don't suppose we can properly grasp the full essence of what it meant for the infinite, holy, omnipotent God of the universe to put on the form of finite man and dwell among the living dead. The reasons for Him doing this are probably deeper than we could possibly contemplate. However, it is not as if we have to guess about this thing. God has given us clear testimony in His Word concerning the reasons why He humbled Himself and "made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness." (Philipians 2:7)

Here are a few of them:
Matt 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Matt 10:34 "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law--a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'
Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
Luke 12:49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
Matt 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
John 12:47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.
1 Tim 1:15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst.
1 John 3:5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
Mark 1:38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come."
John 9:39 Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."
John 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
Luke 5:32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
Matt 9:13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
Mark 2:17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 638 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
Heb 10:7 Then I said, 'Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will, O God.'"
John 12:27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
John 15:22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.
1 John 3:5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.
1 John 3:8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true--even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
But the final reason I ask this question is to focus on the very specific words of Jesus as He was giving the "good confession" before Pilate (1 Timothy 6:13):

John 18:37 "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

Here is one of the clearest and most objective statements that Jesus made about the reason He came into the world. This statement doesn't override the others, in fact, I think it helps to clarify many of them. For example, in 1 John 3:8, we are told that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. What is the devil? A liar. When Jesus said that He didn't come to bring peace, but a sword, we understand that it is not a worldly sword that He is referring to. The Scripture makes reference over and over again to the sword being the Word of God (Eph 6:17), which in Hebrews 4:12 reiterates that it divides (" For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." ) This reinforces what Jesus said about coming for judgment that the blind should see (John 9:39), coming as a light (John 12:46), came to preach (Mark 1:38), came to give us understanding so that we would know him who is true (1 John 5:20), and so on.

Now, so there be no misunderstanding. This does not, in any way, diminish the great, grand and glorious purpose of Jesus to give His life as a ransom (Matt 20:28), that he appeared to take away our sins (1 John 3:5), that He came to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4:10). That is another of those astounding things that are beyond comprehension—that God would, Himself, take the penalty and wrath that was due us. Absolutely breathtaking.

So, our focus upon the words of Jesus to Pilate that He was born and came into the world to testify to the truth, should not be seen as diminishing the work of Christ upon the cross nor the power of the resurrection. But, it is evident that the life of Jesus was dedicated to this task of testifying to the truth. And, in a world that is dead set against truth, it is time for us to elevate it to its proper place. And, as we briefly mentioned in Tour 1, there is a great Scriptural link between the issue of truth and salvation.

Amen and Amen. (Accessed October 18, 2009, Dr. Del Tackett, The Truth Project Website, http//www.thetruthproject.org)

If you are interested in learning more about the DVD curriculum that we will be using for the next 12 weeks or so, I encourage you to access the website at http://www.thetruthproject.org

I hope you will come join us as we learn to develop a Biblical world view. The next lesson deals with the question, "Who is Man?" Cindy and I will be in Washington D.C. next weekend, so we will miss you all. However, Beth Miles has graciously agreed to facilitate the lesson. We will look forward to seeing you all again on November 1.

Have a great week ahead!

We were honored to have Steven and Gena Higginbotham in class today. If the Higginbothams see fit to join us again next week, I hope you will introduce yourselves and I know you will make them feel at home.

THE TRUTH PROJECT BEGINS NEXT WEEK

As we have been discussing in Sunday School, we will begin a new DVD series from Focus on the Family next week: THE TRUTH PROJECT. I have watched the first three lessons. While there are some deep philosophical questions addressed in these lessons, the program attempts to provide a Biblical lens through which we can view the world around us. For example, the first question addressed is, "What is truth?" Think about it. If you were asked to define "truth" right now, what would you say? How would you describe truth? Would you use examples? While the leader of the lesson does make reference to a dictionary definition,(he uses a 1928 version of the dictionary because it is much less directed toward politically correct definitions)he also makes reference to scripture and ultimately uses scripture to help us understand truth and to understand the many concepts in our culture that are simply pernicious lies. I hope you will gain much understanding from these lessons and that you will enjoy learning about the Biblical world view.

I do need to ask for your help. Would you please make a special effort to get to Sunday School by 9:00 a.m. so that we can start the DVD by 9:10 a.m. or 9:15 a.m. at the latest? The DVD lessons run for 56 minutes. Therefore, there will be little or no time for follow-up discussion in class. We may be able to have a very brief follow-up if we get started early, but on most days, we probably will not have time for a discussion. We may be able to consider some issues through this blog...you can make comments on this blog. However, we will need most of the Sunday School class just to watch the DVD. So, please set a reminder and make your best effort to be in class by 9:00 a.m. See you all next Sunday.

"More Than Conquerors"--Romans 8:31-39

Today's lesson was our final lesson in this series. The lesson focused on on the promise implied in Paul's writing, "If God is for us, who can be against us?"(Romans 8:31) We talked about all the challenges of life that can cause us to perceive that everyone and everything is against us. We face such challenges in the area of relationships with family and friends, with our finances, with health issues, with work-related concerns, and in many other areas of life. Yet, we can take comfort in Romans 8:31. If the all-powerful, all-knowing, omnipresent King of the universe is on our side, who can possibly prevail against us? Verse 32 assures us that if God sent his son to earth to die on a cross for us, we can have confidence that He will meet the needs of His children. I love the last two verses of this chapter, "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." AMEN! There is absolutely NOTHING that is capable of separating us from the love of our God. What a powerful, comforting thought during times of challenge and seasons of despair! As Natalie Halbert pointed out during our discussion, this promise can bring great comfort to us IF we will remember it when we face such challenges. I trust that each of us will keep these promises in mind as we face the days ahead!

LET'S EAT SUPPER TOGETHER

On Friday, October 9, the church is offering baby-sitting so that couples can have a night out together. Our class is planning to meet together at a local restaurant and ejoy fellowship with each other while eating a nice meal without having to cut up the meat or fix the sipper cup or referee a disagreement between siblings. It will be a fun time together. Tracey Scasta is checking to see if we can reserve space and will be communicating through the class e-mail. As soon as we determine the location, she will be sending out that information. We plan to get together around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. I hope you will join us for an enjoyable evening with Christian brothers and sisters. Have a great week!

"The Coming Glory"--Romans 8:18-30

A "hope-filled perspective and a spirit-filled passion": these concepts are the theme of our scripture passage this week (Romans 8: 18-30). In today's lesson, we looked at examples of a hope-filled perspective and a spirit-filled passion. Bono, for example, could be considered a person with a spirit-filled passion. He has contributed significantly to the effort to make people aware of the human tragedy that is occurring in Africa. He has worked tirelessly to pressure western governments to provide support for the countries of Africa where abject poverty, a runaway pandemic of AIDS, and government corruption are prevalent. As a result of Bono's commitment and dedication toward bringing about change in Africa, he was named as the TIME MAGAZINE "Person of the Year" in 2005. During one of his speeches, Bono paused and addressed the believers in the room. He asked, "Any believers out there?" And then he exhorted, "For the believers in the room, we should see Africa as an issue of obedience." He continued, "God is with the poor, and He has a special place for them in His heart." And then he exclaimed, "God is with us if we are with them." Bono has a spirit-filled passion. How about you? Is there something in your life that could be described as a "spirit-filled passion"?

As we considered a hope-filled perspective, we talked about the movie "Saint Ralph" in which an unlikely young boy contended to win the Boston Marathon. When Ralph is told that his comatose mother won't recover without a miracle, he decides to create one--by setting out to win the Boston Marathon. Little does he know, he's in for the run of his life. Here are some questions to consider when faced with challenges such as the one that faced Ralph:
* Do you ever feel it's all for naught--that it all went wrong?
* Do you ever feel helpless, hopeless, especially when life doesn't go your way?
* Have you ever had a dream vanish before your watching eyes?
* Have you ever hoped and prayed for a miracle that never came?
* Have you ever failed so badly that you thought it could never be turned into anything good?
* Have you ever wondered if there is any good purpose to suffering and loss?
* Have you ever done your best and done most everything right, only for it all to go wrong?
* To whom do you turn in the midst of such pain, disappointment, fear, suffering, and loss?
* Do you believe in a God who can and does redeem?

In today's scripture passage, Paul addresses these implicit questions. We can indeed view our life and our world with a hope-filled perspective.

Romans 8:28 provides a promise that brings this hope-filled perspective:
"And we know that God causes ALL things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."

Bo Miles shared that he has written beside these verses in his Bible, "9-11". Do you remember the fear and despair that we all experienced on 9-11-2001 and the days immediately after 9-11? What a frightening, difficult time for all Americans. Yet, God's children still had this promise in Romans, God causes ALL things to work together for our good. Somehow, someday, someway the tragic events of 9-11 would be used to work together for the good of those who love God and who are called according to His purpose. We can't help but experience a hope-filled perspective when we meditate on this promise of God.

We also can take comfort in the promise of verses 26-27 in today's passage. Isn't it comforting to know that the Holy Spirit is interceding for you according to the will of God? It gives me great courage and confidence to know that the Holy Spirit Himself is interceding before God on my behalf and even though I may not know the right thing to pray for, I can be assured that the Holy Spirit is interceding for me according to God's will for my life. Amen and Amen.

As you approach the week before you, I hope you will view your world with a hope-filled perspective and that you will develop a spirit-filled passion for the things that God reveals to you.

Life In The Spirit--Romans 8: 1-17

"We Are The Champions!" This song, performed by Queen was the introduction to our lesson today. The words of the chorus state, "We are the champions--my friends--and we'll keep on fighting till the end--We are the champions--We are the champions--No time for losers--'Cause we are the champions of the World." The class considered all the areas of life in which we strive to "be the champion." Some of these areas include athletic games, political campaigns, TV Reality Shows such as "American Idol," "Dancing with the Stars," "Design Challenge," food preparation shows, runway competion for the design of clothes, Miss America, Top 20 lists, Academy Awards, and many more. We also considered the fact that even if we achieve the ultimate success in these areas, it seldom provides long-term satisfaction. C.S. Lewis said, "If I find in myself desires which nothing on earth can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world."
With all of our "wins" in this life, do you sense that a great "win" still escapes you, awaiting another, future world? How does this distant, unattainable win impact you and influence your way of living. What does the Apostle Paul say about our future "win" together with Christ? How does the Apostle Paul describe the Holy Spirit's presence and work in our lives until we receive this future win? [See Romans 8: 1-17]
We also talked about a great movie, "The Cider House Rules," in which a big-hearted medical doctor cared for a bunch of kids in a New England orphanage. Dr. Largent always ended each night in the orphanage with this saying: "Good night, you princes of Maine, you kings of New England." Words of affirmation can be a very powerful means of blessing others. As we read today's scripture, we see that Paul has indeed declared us "Champions"--joint heirs with Jesus, adopted heirs to the kingdom of God--and he blesses us with words of affirmation by discussing our royal victory with Christ the King.
Yes, ladies and gentleman, you are winners in Christ. It has already been determined! You and I can rest assured that we will be triumphant over evil and over sin because of the price already paid by our Savior. In addition, we can take comfort in the fact that the Holy Spirit has indwelled our lives and that we can experience strength in the Holy Spirit through the future hope of our ultimate victory in Christ.
I hope you will speak a blessing of affirmation into someone's life this week and that you will draw on the strength and peace of the Holy Spirit in your present life as well as the assurance of your future victory with Christ!
Have a great week, you princes of the Brazos Valley, you kings of Bryan-College Station. You are royalty in the kingdom of God. Live like it!

The Struggle Within--Romans 7: 13-25

We started our lesson today by viewing the dashboard posted to the left. If this dashboard reflected your feelings and performance, how would the dashboard appear when you are struggling with sin in your life? For example, when you struggle with sin, how does it impact your stress level, how is your frustration level impacted, and what about your enthusiasm for life and your ability to be a real friend to someone? For most of us, the struggle with sin has a dramatic impact on all these areas of our life.

The apostle Paul faced the same issues as he struggled with sin and he wrote about those emotions in the last half of Romans Chapter 7. Perhaps, the focal point for today's lesson is best articulated in Romans 7: 19-20: "For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me."

As children of God, we cannot expect to be free from the temptation of sin. Indeed, the devil often places temptation before God's children as part of his strategy to defeat the influence of God in an evil and broken world. There are many examples of our daily struggle with sin. They include the struggle against sins such as gluttony, gossip, overspending, failure to speak the truth, failing to control anger, making hurtful comments about or toward others, and a whole littany of others.

I used the example of my own struggle with sweets. I love chocolate pie. I can imagine the taste of the deep chocolaty cream and the light sweet meringue and the crisp, buttery crust. However, I also know the evils of this decadent dish. It is loaded with sugar and with fats and with calories. For a person of my stature and physical make-up, a piece of chocolate pie is BAD. Yet, I cannot resist a piece of this dessert if given an opportunity to partake. Even though I know it is bad, I still eat a piece. And, unfortunately, I often will eat more than one piece if given a chance. I know it is bad, I know that it is not healthy for my body, and I know that it will create negative consequences. Yet, in most cases, I simply cannot resist. I know it is bad before I eat it, I know it is not good for me while I am eating it, and I usually regret the fact that I ate it after I eat it. Yet, I eat it when given the opportunity. This creates a feeling of frustration and anxiety.

Paul spoke of this feeling of frustration and stress in today's scripture. Paul makes it clear that even the children of God can experience failure when it comes to avoiding sin because of the bondage of sin over our flesh. Our ONLY chance for defeating the temptation of sin is to depend on the power of Jesus. There is only one person who has ever walked across the face of this earth who was successful in meeting all the requirements of the law. That person was and is Jesus. For the rest of us, our broken flesh will cause us to fail. Paul describes himself (and us) as a "wretched man" in verse 24. Yet, in verse 25, he recognizes Jesus Christ as our salvation against this sin. Remember, our fight against sin is a war and our only chance is to depend on the Lord. We ended our lesson with a reflection on this quote from C.S. Lewis:

“No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means.”
HAVE A GREAT and BLESSED WEEK!

Gatorbait Triathalon 09

I trust that you all had a great time in Sunday School today and that you were blessed by the presentations of Leslie and David. Thank God for their commitment and willingness to follow God's direction for their lives. I am sorry that I was unable to hear their comments this morning, but I am confident that they stirred your heart.

Cindy and I thoroughly enjoyed our weekend with our girls. We watched the girls compete in the "Gatorbait Triathalon" in Boerne, Texas. The triathalon includes a swim in the lake, a run, and a bicycle race. This particular race got its name from the fact that the Boerne lake had a resident alligator at one time. The joke among triathalon participants was that one of the participants would likely be gator bait. Fortunately, we didn't see a gator while our girls and hundreds of others were swimming.

Our oldest daughter, Jennifer placed second in her age category and our youngest daughter, Brittany placed 8th in her age category. Jennifer doesn't like to be second in anything, but she was OK with her performance in this race and even reconciled herself to second place because the first place finisher was celebrating her birthday on the day of the race. She said she told herself, "Jennifer, you slow down and let that girl win....it is her birthday." Yeah, Right!

Brittany, on the other hand, was just thrilled that she finished the race and that she did not have a major crash on the bicycle!

Cindy also celebrated her birthday this weekend, so we were able to "kill two birds with one stone." It was nice to be with the girls to celebrate their Mom's birthday!

I have attached a few pictures from our weekend below.

We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday. Here are the prayer requests copied from Tracey's e-mail for this week:

Jackson- Hollis parents are moving this week. Please remember them as it has been 15 yrs since their last move.Miles- Please remember Beth's mom as she has a melanoma removed from her arm this week. Please pray for AWANAS as it starts back up today.A big thank you to missionaries Leslie and David who spoke to our class today! Please pray for Leslie as she has decided to move to China permanently!Have a great week!

SEPTEMBER 6, 2009--"Holy Law" Romans 7: 1-12

Today's lesson continued to deal with Paul's teaching from the book of Romans and spoke specifically to the issue of legalism. We began the lesson today with a discussion of legalism as it exists in our world today. We talked about the recent story of a teenager in Florida who converted from the Muslim religion to Christianity. According to recent press reports, the young lady has been placed under temporary custody of the state due to the fear that her father will conduct or at at least allow an "honor killing", causing the youngster to be killed because of her repudiation from the Muslim religion. Would you consider such activity to reflect the principle of legalism or does it reflect grace? Obviously, the concept of "honor killing" as a response to one who disavows his/her Muslim beliefs is a strong example of the concept of legalism.

Another example we discussed was the high school student in Indiana who was competing for the state diving championship. During the competition, she removed a pony-tail holder from her hair and slipped it on her wrist. She was disqualified from the competition because one of the judges noticed the item around her wrist and interpreted it to be a violation of the rule prohibiting jewelery to be worn by participants--another extreme example of legalism. We talked about legalism in our society and considered the fact that it is impossible to comply with every law and every rule all the time. There are many special circumstances and considerations that cause people not to be in compliance with the letter of every law all the time.

Deanne Holmes shared a perfect example. She talked about the practice of carrying candy and or snacks into the theatre when the family is going to watch a movie. OK...who among us hasn't done this or something similar? I know someone who has even taken food into Kyle Field. Technically, such behavior is a violation of the rules. Realistically, who wants to pay $4 for a package of Junior Mints or $3 for a bag of popcorn? Where is the line? Where does such behavior become sin? Is there a gray area?

In today's scripture, Paul points out that we are all held accountable for complying with the law as long as we live. He used the analogy of a woman married to a man. As long as she is married to a man and as long as the man lives, she commits adultery if she is joined with another man. However, if her husband dies, she is no longer bound to him and does not commit adultery if she is joined with another man.

Therefore, even though we cannot possibly comply with the law which God gave to His people, we can avoid the penalty of death which is the price for non-compliance with God's law. We avoid the penalty of death by dying with Christ in Sin, being released from the law, just as the woman in the illustration was released from the requirements of the law when her husband died. In the same way that we are released from the legal union of marriage through the death of a spouse, we are released from the law through Christ's death.

We considered the following verses in today's discussion:
What is God's opinion of the law?

Exodus 18:16 The law is the statutes of God for determining right and wrong .
Malachi 4:4 The law is to be remembered.
Matthew 5:17-19 Christ came to fulfill the law not abolish it.

What is the ultimate demand of the law?

Galatians 3:10 Total obedience
James 2:10 Complete perfection of law keeping

What is the purpose of the law according to Paul in verses 7-8?

The law helps reveal sin.

Challenge for this week: Read and meditate on the 10 commandments (Exodus 20). Consider which sins are revealed in your life as you meditate on the 10 commandments.

What emotions do you feel when you consider that God's grace and forgiveness has freed you from the penalty of sin which is death?

August 30, 2009 "Eternal Living" Romans 6: 19-23

At the beginning of our discussion today, we looked at the results of several polls that suggested there are a large number of people in our society who do not believe in heaven or hell and who do not believe that Jesus is the only way to attain salvation and eternal life. One of the surveys to which we referred can be accessed at the following web address:

http://www.beliefnet.com/News/2005/08/Newsweekbeliefnet-Poll-Results.aspx

Our lesson today focused on this progression as outlined in Paul's writing:

Obedience leads to righteousness (Romans 6:16) which leads to sanctification (6:19) which leads to eternal life (6:22).

We looked at Romans 6:23 from the perspective of a believer. While the wages of sin is death, the Gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Living eternally should begin the moment we are saved and we should always live life as if we are dead to sin and free from the slavery and death that are the consequences of sin. We should be "living for eternity" in all the areas of life:

marriage, finances, parenting, the future, our vocation, when dealing with stress, in acquiring possessions, in our prayer life, in church attendance, and in witnessing to others. Let's all strive to live a life of eternity this week, one that is dead to sin and free to the gift of life that comes from Christ Jesus.

CLASS SOCIAL

We had a great time at the class social on Saturday night. We enjoyed watching the kids swim and visiting with each other. I know it is hard to schedule such events, but it is really enjoyable to be able to learn more about each other and to see the kids. I enjoyed swapping rattlesnake and hunting stories with Bo, hearing about the warm water on the carpet at midnight in their home--and what Bo assumed it was--, learning about John Brick's new teaching challenge this semester and hearing about Jamee Brick's "surprise" recruitment as a soccer coach, getting updates on Liz and John Chivis and their do-it-yourself remodeling project, and watching Bill and Kathleen keep up with their little ones. Wow! It made me tired just watching! Cindy and I really enjoyed meeting the kids. Hallie and Becka Scasta reminded us so much of our own two daughters as their age difference is similar and they both have their own distinctive personalities that are quite unique and yet, they have many similarities as sisters growing up together. We also enjoyed seeing the new technology in kid stuff (floatie belts, life preservers, and water guns) as well as the fast food preferences of different families. I also had an opportunity to learn about the work that Stefanie and Patrick Miles do in Fort Worth and learned how they met and courted. In addition, Bo told me about the history of the "Raising a Modern Day Knight" training that is an important offering in our church today. Bo also shared this website with me if you would like to learn more about this program:

http://www.rmdk.com/

I am going to try to publish a link to a slideshow of the pictures I took at the Sunday School Party. However, I am going to put it on another post to be sure that I don't destroy the writing that I have done above. If you were unable to attend this social, I hope you will make every effort to attend the next one. It really is good to get to know our Christian brothers and sisters better.

Have a blessed week.

August 23, 2009 Class Follow-Up

August 23, 2009--Romans 6: 8--18

LESSON SUMMARY

Today's lesson was entitled "Righteous Slaves." Paul taught in these scriptures that we are all slaves either to sin or righteousness and he encouraged God's children to be a slave to righteousness and an instrument or tool of righteousness to others. Paul makes it clear in verses 8-10 that believers should live for God, now and forever. In verses 11-13, he emphasizes that Christians should be dead to sin, but alive to God, should not allow sin to reign in our bodies, and should use our body as an instrument of righteousness.

During the lesson today, we pondered this question: "How can you actively reject the reign of sin in your life on a daily basis?" We identified the following strategies: a strong prayer life, spending time in the Word of God, and recognizing the fact that the victory has already been won--the victory belongs to us if we will depend on God's strength to help us defeat the influence of sin in our lives. When you are faced with a temptation or an inclination to sin, do you remember this truth? Jesus died on a cross for us. His death paid the price for our sin. He sent the Holy Spirit to in-dwell our lives and to aid us as we fight to overcome temptation and our proclivity toward sin. "I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me!" (Phillipians 4:13)

We also discussed the fact that it is impossible to serve two masters. Therefore, when we try to rationalize behavior that is not pleasing to God, we need to remember that it is impossible to be a slave to sin AND be a slave to righteousness at the same time. We make the choice of whether or not we will be a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness--it is a personal decision that is made repeatedly throughout each day of our lives. As Christians, we should be living a life of obedience on a daily basis and we should not accept the authority of sin in our lives--not as habitual sin or even as occasional sin (verses 8:1 and 8:15). Here are some typical issues that tend to enslave Christians. Perhaps, you can identify others?

FINANCIAL PROBLEMS WORLD EVENTS

WORK ISSUES PARENTING

MEDICAL PROBLEMS RELATIONSHIPS WITH FRIENDS/NEIGHBORS AND FAMILY MEMBERS

MARITAL CONFLICT BAD HABITS

According to Paul, the path to becoming a slave to righteousness and a tool of righteousness for our neighbors is simple:

1. Die to sin--ask forgiveness and repent from sin

2. Be alive in God--spend time in prayer, study the Word, live to please God

3. Do not allow sin to reign in your body--reject the influence of sin in your body

4. Use your body as an instrument of righteousness--serve others, influence others, be a role model for others

LIVE AS A SLAVE TO RIGHTEOUSNESS

Think about these questions this week:

Who or what determines the things that dominate or control a person?

What would Paul say to a psychologist who says that you cannot change behavior that is inherited?

What kind of behavior are your children being exposed to that could become "inherited behavior"?

Have you ever been guilty of trying to serve two masters?

I don't know about you guys, but I was absolutely lifted up by the singing of "How Great Thou Art" in the worship service today. I grew up hearing that song and it always brings chills to
my spine when it is performed with passion as it was today. I have heard it performed by many different artists, but Elvis is still my favorite. Just take a look at the words of the first verse and you can understand the power of this great classic:
Oh Lord my God when I in awesome wonder Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the **rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
REFRAIN:Then sings my soul my savior God to thee
How great thou art

"Dying to Live"--Lesson Discussion on August 16, 2009

Today's lesson deals with the writing of Paul in Romans 6: 1-7. The theme of the lesson is the death to one's old life (before Christ) and the living of a transformed life after becoming a follower of Christ. The lesson began with a discussion of an Afghan man who faced the death penalty as a consequence for his converstion to Christianity. We also considered the example of former U.S. Olympic Skier Brodie Miller who went to the Olympics as a heavy favorite in his field and, as a result of two weeks of partying and socializing rather than making the sacrifice required for concentration and high performance, failed to meet the expectations for success in the Olympic races. The lesson helped us to understand the concept of dying to self and dying to the old way of life before we became Christians and living a new life, transformed to the life of Godliness.

In the lesson today, we studied Paul's admonition that we should die to our old life, die to ourselves, die to sin, just as Jesus died for our sin, and that we should live a life that honors God and reflects His presence in our lives as we were resurrected with Jesus, freed from the slavery of sin. In other words, we should not allow "pet sins" or other unGodly habits to dominate our daily lives. We emphasized the truth that God is in control as each of us attempts to avoid the temptations that come before us on a regular basis. We suggested personalizing one or more of the following verses as an aide in successfully overcoming the temptations of satan:

GOD IS IN CONTROL
Pick one of these verses which reminds
you that God is in control.
1 Peter 5:7
Luke 12:32
Proverbs 3:5-6
Psalm 46:1-2
Psalm 91:9-10
Psalm 4:8
Psalm 121:7-8
Deuteronomy 33:12
Psalm 18:2
John 16:33
Romans 6:5-6
Some of the strategies that we identified to help us defeat the temptation to engage in "pet sins" included fleeing from evil, exercising caution regarding our friends and colleagues, a strong prayer life, spending time in the Word, accountability groups or accountability relationships, and the personalization of God's Word in our lives. Challenge for this week:
Take at least one of the verses listed above and write the verse in a personalized style that speaks to you. If you feel led to do so, please share your personalized version of the scripture on this blog. May the Lord bless each of you and your families this week as we consider these truths. In the words of Max Lucado, "It's Not About Me."

Thursday, August 13, 2009

Greetings and welcome to a new endeavor! Beginning during the week of August 30, 2009, I hope to create a weekly blog in which members of our Sunday School Class can extend our discussion of the scripture from our weekly class discussion, make application of the weekly lesson to our daily lives, or make application of other scripture passages to our lives, expand our prayer list by making adjustments on a daily and even hourly basis as needed, share anecdotes, jokes, and stories that may enrich the lives of others, and use our interaction and communication to grow closer to the Lord and to Honor Him. I hope to make at least an initial posting each week and I hope that class members will share responses and make comments during the week as well as add personal prayer requests and share other information that will be meaningful and helpful to our Christian brothers and sisters, and perhaps, even serve as an evangelical vehicle for bringing a person or family to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ! Please join me as we attempt to use technology to expand our learning, lift up each other, keep prayers lists current, and Praise Him!

Jimmy
